If you have not been offered a place at St Michael’s Catholic Grammar School, the law entitles you to appeal against that decision to an Independent Appeal Panel. This panel is completely independent of the school and the Local Authority. The appeals are usually held at the school.

You should include any evidence or supporting material with your appeal form and you MUST give the grounds for your appeal at the time you lodge your appeal form. Your appeal form will not be accepted unless you state the grounds for your appeal. You may appeal for more than one school.

You are advised that appeals for Grammar Schools are different to non-selective schools. The panel’s role is to establish if there is sufficient third party evidence to persuade them that your son is of the standard for St Michael’s school. As a “super selective” Grammar School, the standard is the score of the last person to be offered a place in the cohort for that year group. If the panel do accept your evidence, they then go on to establish if your son’s prejudice in not being given a place is greater than the school’s own prejudice to education and resources case. The timetable for appeals is as follows:-

Last day for lodging appeal forms for a place in year 7 to start in September 2018

4 pm on Thursday 29 March 2018. Any appeal forms received after this date will be considered a late appeal and may not be heard until September 2018. You MUST state the reasons for your appeal and supply any documentary evidence at this stage.

Monday 23 April 2018. The Stage 1 part of the hearing will take place at 8 am. Appointments for stage 2 will be advised on the letter of invitation.

Invitation letter giving details about your hearing will be sent by the Clerk to the Independent Appeal Panel

Monday 16 April 2018. Please send FIVE copies to the Clerk (not the school). These must be in A4 format and stapled in the top left hand corner. Please do not place any evidence in presentation packs or folders. You are advised that additional paperwork received on the day of the appeal hearing will not be taken into account.

These appeals are heard within 30 school days of the appeal form being lodged with the Clerk. Unless you waive this right, you will be given 10 school days’ notice of the hearing. Additional evidence must be sent to the Clerk to the panel not later than 5 working days before the hearing. Decision letters are dispatched 5 working days after the hearing.
