Luanda Project
As you may be aware, St Michael’s has a partnership with the Catholic parish of Luanda, in Kenya. The partnership began in 2011 with thanks to the Mill Hill Missionary parish in Luanda. Within this parish we have links with seven projects, the St Joseph’s Rehabilitation Centre for Street boys, St Beatrice's EDC Nursery School, Ebukuya Primary School for the Hearing Impaired, Ebukuya Secondary School for the Hearing Impaired, Ebukuya Primary School, St Bahkita's Secondary School and Ebukhiliti Primary School.
This year ten students and four members of staff will have the opportunity to visit Luanda for two weeks to help in the schools and learn more about life in this area. We have raised over £100,000 over the last nine years. This money has covered the cost of the project, including flights, accommodation, visas and food as well as resources for the projects and we were also able to give approximately £12,000 donation between these seven projects which has been spent on computers, books, stationery and improving facilities for living and learning. This year, we want to raise even more money to help our partnership progress.
Fundraising events which have taken place in school have been the Big Sleepovers for Years 7 and 8, collections at the school shows, the Fashion Exchanges, many cake sales and a stall at the Christmas Bazaar. Every student who is going to Luanda has had to fund raise at least £1600 to go and have raised this money in a variety of ways, including grants from the Jack Petchey Fund and the Catenians.
This year, ten more students and four members of staff are preparing to travel to Luanda in July and would be very grateful for any help and support you might be able to give. You can donate via cheque made payable to St. Michael's journeys or on the VirginMoneyGiving website through our charity The Archangel Trust.
