Y12 Schools' Analyst Competition- Chemistry
Year 12 Schools & Analyst Competition | Chemistry
On Tuesday 4 th June, our Y12 Chemists participated in the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Schools'
Analyst Competition. The competition enables students to demonstrate and expand on their existing
chemistry knowledge, skills and aptitude for analytical science through practical analytical
experiments based on relevant societal or industrial problem. This year, teams of three students
competed against each other in a series of analytical challenges all while supporting the Trading
Standards Office.
The analytical challenges included:
1. Titrations to determine the mass of vitamin C in different effervescent tablets
2. Extracting a mixture of dyes from different flavours of sweets and using thin layer
chromatography (TLC) to determine which specific dyes were used.
3. Volumetric analysis to determine the % of sodium bicarbonate in different samples of cake
mixture.
Our chemists worked very efficiently and methodically within their teams and thoroughly enjoyed
being able to draw together and apply their knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry to the
light-hearted scenario that was set! We are incredibly proud of what they have achieved!
The results will be revealed in the next couple of weeks so watch this space! Please find below a
series of images that were captured throughout the day.
