Year 12 Schools Analyst Competition - Chemistry

9th June 2023

Year 12 Schools' Analyst Competition | Chemistry

On Tuesday 6th June, 24 Year 12 chemists participated in the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Schools' Analyst Competition. This year's competition centred around a "Bake Off" county competition where students were able to develop their practical skills further by conducting numerous investigations:

1.An array of chemical tests to determine the ingredients used.

2. Multiple titrations to determine which of the 3 cake mixtures had been contaminated with an excess amount of sodium bicarbonate.

3. Thin-layer chromatography to work out who committed this heinous crime.

Our chemists worked very efficiently and methodically within their teams and thoroughly enjoyed being able to draw together and apply their knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry to the light-hearted scenario that was set! We are incredibly proud of what they have achieved!

The results will be revealed in the next couple of weeks so watch this space! Please find below a series of images that were captured throughout the day.
